At first glance, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023) might seem an unexpected choice for an Ignatian film club. But look again, and it becomes a rich invitation to discernment, identity, freedom, and the courage to step into one’s real vocation.

Far from being a light comedy, Barbie is a story about noticing when the world we are part of feels constructed, constrained, or counterfeit compared with the life God desires for us; listening to the deeper stirrings of the heart; choosing a path that is more human, more honest, and more free.

It asks questions at the very centre of Ignatian spirituality:
âť“ How do we discern between the roles we perform and the person God calls us to be?
âť“ Where is God in the tension between perfection and authenticity, expectation and desire, fear and freedom?

Gerwig’s film blends humour and poignancy to explore themes of dignity, agency, embodiment, and the search for meaning in a world full of noise and pressure. Beneath the bright colours lies a surprisingly tender meditation on what it means to be human; and how we accompany one another on the journey.

In the Ignatian tradition of “finding God in all things,” Barbie offers a playful yet profound space for reflection, conversation, and noticing where grace might be at work in very unexpected places.

All are welcome; come with curiosity, openness and bring a friend.
